My name is Hunter Kemp and I’m running for Georgia State House District 84.
I’m running because I know that a voice that cares can go a long way.
My mother was a single parent who worked four jobs and struggled to make ends meet. I was raised by my mother and grandmother. When I was growing up, a new family moved next door to us from Buffalo, New York. Their son introduced me to roller hockey, and eventually ice hockey. I loved it (and I was great at it)! Now hockey is a very expensive sport, and my mother sold any possessions in our home that were worth selling to afford for me to play each season. She believed in me. She believed in my talent and did whatever she could to make sure I had the best opportunity to have an opportunity. I was one of the few players in Georgia to make it to the Tier one elite League across the United States.
Her commitment paid off because I went on to play Junior A hockey in Canada and AAA Hockey after graduating high school. My point is that hockey gave me something to look forward to. When a person lives in poverty, sometimes there’s nothing to look forward to. I had a ton of talent, but few resources, so thank God my mom was able to make sacrifices to invest in my future.
After playing hockey for 4 years, I went to college and studied history and economics while working for my family’s plumbing company. It was through plumbing that I met my girlfriend, Meghan, and changed career paths into asset management. My mother formed a non-profit with the mission of supporting children from single-parent families. She was also able to help get legislation passed to fight against the statute of limitations on rape cases. My mother showed me that a voice that cares is not only needed but required to bring change. Through her advocacy, I saw all the good that elected officials’ voices and influence can bring to the lives of everyday people. I’ve also seen when politics is leading the way instead of people leading the way. I’ve seen people be left behind, forgotten about, oppressed and represented by elected leaders who refuse to do and be what their constituents need. I plan to focus on solutions in housing, healthcare, and education to support the most vulnerable populations in Georgia because I know that a voice that cares can go a very long way.
